- Abstract:
- This data set is a geographic information systems (GIS) version of part of the results of Canada-Alberta Mineral Development Agreement project 'Geological mapping, prospecting and sampling of the Southern Alberta Rift.' The data represent elemental analyses of 415 stream sediment samples collected from the study area in 1992. Analytes include: Ag, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn by atomic absorption; Ag, As, Au, Ba, Br, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Eu, Fe, Hf, Ir, La, Lu, Mo, Na, Ni, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, Sm, Sn, Ta, Tb, Te, Th, U, W, Yb, Zn, and Zr by neutron activation; and Hg by cold vapour extraction/atomic absorption. Results show that some of the stream sediments contain higher concentrations of mineral elements than normal.

- Just over 4 percent of all 415 samples' values in this data set were checked against the orginal published values, and no inconsistencies were found. This data set was therefore deemed to accurately represent the data presented in OFR 1993-13A (with the minor exception of the 'below detection' values).

- Stream sediment sample locations are noted on the original, published sample cards as northings and eastings rounded to the nearest 50 m. Coordinates were subsequently reprojected and stored in the AGS MIS database in geographic coordinates with a precision of 3 decimal places, which is about the same precision as the original data at that latitude. Check plots were made of 5 elements, Cu, Pb, Zn, As and Ag were compared with the anomaly maps from OF1993-13A. Comparisons of anomaly locations and sample numbers indicated that the coordinates used to plot the new set of maps were OK. With the foregoing in mind, a subjective estimate of the absolute positional accuracy of these data is that they are within 100 m of their true, sampled locations.

- As part of the Canada-Alberta Mineral Development Agreement, the geochemistry data published in AGS Open File Reports 1993-13A and -B were entered into the AGS Mineral Information System database.

- An MSAccess version of the AGS mineral information system was queried to create a shapefile containing all geochemical analytical data for the Southern Alberta Rift project. This produced a point data file of some 415 stream sediment samples, with locations in geographic, NAD27 coordinates. The resulting shapefile was reprojected into geographic, NAD83 coordinates using FME data translation software.
