This dataset results from mapping the surficial geology, and sand and gravel deposits with aggregate potential in the McLennan area (NTS 83N). This shapefile shows where materials and geology were observed at natural outcrops, sand and gravel pits, hand auger holes, and excavations dug by a backhoe. The type, thickness and order of the observed materials are described in the attribute table.
Map 536 is a PDF version generated from the shapefiles.
While mapping the sand and gravel deposits in the McLennan area, the materials and geology observed at natural outcrops, sand and gravel pits, hand auger holes, and excavations dug by a backhoe were described on paper forms and in field notebooks. We recorded the locations of the site investigations using a GPS (Garmin GPSmap 60CSx). A summer student entered these observations and locations into an Access database. The author verified the data by visually inspecting every record entered by the student.
The Access database was queried to make a table that included the name, location and materials observed at each site. This table was appended to the table of sites that were observed by the surficial geology mappers (Appendix 1 of Alberta Geological Survey Open File Report 2008-02). The site descriptions from the Open File Report were edited to match the convention of the sand and gravel site data. We entered the table of site descriptions into ArcGIS and created a shapefile of site investigations in 83N for public distribution.
