Description:
Abstract:
Sand bodies within the Sunchild aquifer subcrop over most of its extent, and because overlying Neogene sediment is relatively thin in the western part of the Paskapoo Formation, the unit expresses itself as the present-day topography. Constructing the Sunchild aquifer-thickness map was somewhat problematic because of the difficulty of mapping the step-like distribution and connection of sand bodies that, in places, are laterally adjacent to muddy intervals. The resultant isopach was generated by subtracting the Lacombe Member surface from the Sunchild surface to yield an approximation of Sunchild aquifer thickness. The Sunchild aquifer thickens from less than 50 m in the east to more than 300 m to the west. The apparent great thickness (about 600 to 700 m) of aquifer along the deformation edge southwest of Drayton Valley is interpreted as an area of stacked, coarse fluvial deposits extending from the base of the Paskapoo Formation almost to surface.
Purpose:
To provide input data into groundwater-flow modelling for the Edmonton-Calgary Corridor groundwater mapping program.

Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report:
There could be a significant difference between sand thickness values calculated at a borehole site and the modelled values assigned to the locations of the centre of regional 1000 m size grid cells. We tested the values to ensure they were not less than 0 as a result of surface subtraction.
Logical Consistency Report:
This raster dataset represents the amalgamated thicknesses of >55% average sand values that overlie muddy Lacombe sediment in 25 m thick slices constructed parallel to the base of the Paskapoo Formation. There are no duplicate locations because all data values are assigned x-y locations by the modelling software. Null data are coded '-9999'. Isopach values cannot be less than ‘0.’
Completeness Report:
This dataset represents the elevation of only those 25 m thick slices in the 3-D model in which the average sand values exceed 55% and overlie the muddy sediment in the underlying 25 m thick slice. Please see Alberta Geological Survey Bulletin 66 for a detailed discussion of the selection criteria used.

Process Step:
Process Description:

We derived the three-dimensional (x, y, z and n) data used to model the distribution of sandiness from the calculated, average sand value of 25 m thick slice intervals in boreholes completed in the Paskapoo Formation. The Sunchild aquifer was subjectively defined based on the three-dimensional renderings of >55% sand isovalues using Voxler ™ model-viewing software. The decision on how to assign a top to the three-dimensional body was based on the maximum height above the base of the Paskapoo Formation that a sand body extended above the muddy Lacombe aquitard. The height above the base of the Paskapoo Formation was later transformed into elevations in metres above sea level. Refer to Alberta Geological Survey Bulletin 66 for more descriptions regarding methodology.

Because the Sunchild aquifer is the uppermost, regionally extensive aquifer system in the Paskapoo Formation, the elevation and structural top of the uppermost sand bodies that make up the aquifer are represented by the bedrock topographic surface. We generated the isopach values by subtracting the top of the Sunchild aquifer from the top of the Lacombe aquitard.
