Abstract:

This digital data release contains permeametry results from selected samples of Alberta stratigraphic units evaluated for shale- and siltstone-hosted hydrocarbon resource potential. The strata evaluated include the following units:

- basal Banff Formation,

- Colorado Group,

- Duvernay Formation,

- Exshaw Formation,

- Montney Formation,

- Muskwa Formation,

- Wilrich Member,

- Nordegg Member, and

- Rierdon Formation.

Data for other stratigraphic units are also included in this file.

Purpose:
To provide the public with permeametry analysis data for samples from Alberta stratigraphic units evaluated for shale- and siltstone-hosted hydrocarbon resource potential.

Lithologies are generalized and based on visual description.

Allocation of stratigraphic unit names and ranks was based on available stratigraphic information at the time of sampling. No attempt was made to reallocate samples within a consistent regional stratigraphic framework. In some cases, stratigraphic unit allocation may be incorrect.

The lab noted that "Leak permeability tests of probe seals (before sample analysis) yielded values of ~0.0034-0.0043 millidarcys" for Sample_ID's 8115, 8119, 8707, 8718, 8786, 8840, 8856, 8902, 8908, 8918, 9208, 9237, 9365 and 9386.

Logical Consistency Report:

A combination of Sample_ID, Spot_Position and Perm_Run_Number will result in unique records. A site may have multiple samples, and each sample may have multiple analyses performed on it, in addition to lab standards and duplicates.

Fields with no analysis values indicates that the specified test was not run on that sample. The number of significant digits of the sample results is as provided by the laboratory. Trailing zeros may have been dropped by Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Access.

All attributes have well defined domains and were found to be valid within the domains.

The laboratory performed general validation checks using lab standards and duplicates.

In this dataset, the term shale describes a fine-grained, organic-rich rock and may not imply fissility.

We collected representative core samples based on available core for the target formations to get a reasonable spatial distribution of data. The core did not always cover the entire target interval. We performed high-density sampling in the shale intervals and other fine-grained rocks. Lower density sampling was done in other lithologies and bounding formations. Where accessible, we sampled outcrops on target formations. If Date_Collected is 20xx-01-01, we collected the sample during the year indicated, but the exact date is unknown.

Core locations are based on the unique well identifier. This dataset uses bottom-hole latitude and longitude coordinates of the respective oil or gas well provided by the Alberta Energy Regulator. We determined outcrop locations using the Global Positioning System. The maximum and average errors in horizontal position associated with these locations are +/- 20 m and +/-7 m, respectively.

All core samples were depth referenced to their respective core boxes. The vertical position of most samples was recorded as core depth relative to kelly bushing. If core depth was not recorded, a depth corrected to the geophysical logs was used; however, this was rarely needed. At outcrop sites, a Global Positioning System unit at each site calculated the vertical positions of the outcrop samples. The average vertical positional accuracy of the GPS elevation data was estimated to be +/- 8 metres.

We collected outcrop samples from various outcrop sites during fieldwork excursions from 2007 to 2011. Core samples were collected at the Alberta Energy Regulator’s Core Research Centre.

Geologists recorded the sample and site information, such as location, depth, formation, and a brief lithological description at the time of collection. This dataset includes permeameter analysis.

We received the results from the laboratory in multiple spreadsheets, which we imported into a Microsoft Access database. The data were exported as flat files for public release. The raw data was compared to the exported data to ensure that no errors were introduced during data processing and export.
