These data comprise the line features of Alberta Geological Survey Map 582, Surficial Geology of West-Central Alberta, and are based on a compilation of previously published 1:100 000 scale surficial geology maps in NTS 83K, and new light detection and ranging (LiDAR) mapping based on 2015 field work conducted in NTS 83E, 83F, 83G, 83J and 83L.
The data were created in geodatabase format and output for public distribution in shapefile format.
Our processes included:
1. making a LiDAR imagery mosaic for NTS 83E, 83F, 83G, 83J, 83K and 83L;
2. relief shading the LiDAR DEM;
3. clipping Landsat-8 scenes (courtesy of the U.S. Geological Survey) to the map area boundary;
4. performing image classification on the Landsat data, collecting training objects, and classifying peatlands using Landsat spectral properties and LiDAR topographic indices;
5. delineating non-peatland polygons from object-based analysis of a slope image derived from the LiDAR imagery
6. augmenting the classified landforms with digitization of polygons and line features across the LiDAR image of NTS 83E, 83F, 83G, 83J, 83K and 83L using ArcGIS;
7. labelling spatial features;
8. checking the quality of the digital file; and
9. proofreading the text.
