Description:
Abstract:

The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) has updated its digital data (shapefile) of bedrock valley thalwegs to include the addition of more than 1350 new valley thalwegs. The revised shapefile includes fifteen fields of descriptive information, including references to the sources of data collected over more than 50 years at AGS. These attributes enable the user to query thalwegs based on age, nature of valley exposure, genesis of valley, the catchment stream/valley, and the depositional basin.

Unlike previous maps and digital datasets, thalwegs captured in this shapefile are not just those of buried bedrock valleys, or valleys of preglacial age, but include all valleys incised into bedrock including valleys of present-day rivers that have downcut into bedrock. In this last case, incision to bedrock was verified by locating exposures of bedrock from high-quality Google Earth imagery.

AGS has attempted to preserve the traces of historical work, altering or omitting thalwegs only where new information shows either the presence, or the position, to be invalid. Very few edits were made of this nature.

As a result of an initiiative in 2018-2019 to update the bedrock topography map of Alberta, new mapping in the northern part of the province (Peace River to Ft. McMurray) supported the addition of a few new thalwegs and edits of a few previously defined thalwegs.

Purpose: To be used for the interpretation of Cenozoic geology in Alberta in a GIS environment.

Process Step:
Process Description:
Using the shapefile published in AGS DIG 2007-0026 as a starting point, the compiler reviewed and adjusted the thalwegs in that dataset in light of recently published bedrock topography and sediment thickness maps, as well as their positions relative to outcrop visible in Google Earth land surface imagery. An AGS-internal 12m-resolution digital elevation model (DEM), derived from 2m-resolution LIDAR data and 25m-resolution SRD DEM data, was used to modify some of the locations where necessary. Newly interpreted thalwegs were digitized for selected areas of the province where AGS is currently working (i.e., 2018). These areas include the thalwegs of bedrock valleys incised into the Swan Hills, north-central Alberta, and thalwegs of bedrock valleys in parts of the front ranges of the Rocky Mountains. The creation of a new version of AGS' digital bedrock topography map in early 2019 resulted in a number of new addditions or edits to existing thalweg traces in the northern part of the province, in the region extending from Peace River to Ft. McMurray.

Attribute Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Attribute Domain Values:
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Glacial
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
These valleys are defined as having been formed sometime during the Pleistocene, after the preglacial period, but not during the last phases of the last glaciation. Some may have also been formed by glacial meltwater or by typical subaerial fluvial erosion during interglacial periods. Others may have formed during the last glaciation as either tunnel valleys, or ice-walled stream trenches. They are recognized by the presence of Laurentide provenance sediment in their valley floors, and an overlay of one or more glacial diamicts (tills).
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain Value: Interglacial
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
These valleys are defined as having been formed sometime during the Pleistocene, after the preglacial period, but not during the last phases of the last glaciation. They are interpreted to have formed by typical subaerial fluvial erosion during interglacial periods. They are recognized by the presence of Laurentide provenance sediment in their valley floors, and an overlay of one or more glacial diamicts (tills). Five of these valleys are defined specifically as interglacial by A. Stalker.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Late glacial
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Late glacial bedrock valleys are interpreted to have been formed by the incision of Late Wisconsin-aged glacial meltwater channels into the bedrock surface. These are valleys were eroded during the deglacial stage of the last Laurentide Ice Sheet. Included in this category are glacial-lake spillway valleys eroded by the catastrophic release of ice-ponded glacial lakes. It is possible that recent streams have re-occupied some of these valleys (see description of ‘Late-glacial-recent’).
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Late glacial-recent
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
These bedrock valleys are believed to have been initially formed by glacial meltwater channels or spillways but have since been reoccupied by recent, post-glacial streams that too may have eroded into bedrock. Valleys in this age class may easily be grouped with those in the ‘Late glacial’ age class.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Postglacial-recent
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Postglacial-recent bedrock valleys are considered to have been formed immediately subsequent to deglaciation by the re-establishment of subaerial drainage. In almost all cases these are valleys, or segments of valleys, or present-day rivers that have incised new valleys into the bedrock surface since the retreat of the last glaciation, and continue to do so. These valleys may be under-represented in the data set, as it is likely that not all present-day river valleys that incise to bedrock have been captured.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Pre-last glacial
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Pre-last glacial bedrock valleys are interpreted to have formed before the last glaciation. This class of bedrock valleys is subject to re-classification in that they are similar to glacial and interglacial valleys, or preglacial valleys. In some cases these valleys are expressed as palimpsest valleys with partial infill, such that elements of their valley morphology indicate a glacial meltwater origin. In some studies these valleys have been called ‘preglacial’, simply reflecting that they were formed prior to the last glaciation, not necessarily the first glaciation. They may in fact be palimpsest preglacial valleys they have been reoccupied and exposed during subsequent interglacial and post glacial streams.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Pre-last glacial-recent
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Valleys formed prior to either glaciation or to the last glaciation and have been reoccupied and eroded by present-day streams. In some cases these valleys are buried with a thin mantle of glacigenic or recent sediment that has subsequently been eroded by present-day streams. Most of the valleys in the Swan Hills and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains fall into this age classification. .
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Preglacial
Enumerated Domain Value Definition: Preglacial valleys are classed as having being formed prior to Laurentide glaciation.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Preglacial-glacial
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Bedrock valleys considered to have been formed prior to glaciation, but which have been reoccupied and possibly further eroded by glacial meltwater or glacial lake spillway drainage.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Preglacial-glacial-recent
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Valleys that display elements of erosion during preglacial time and reoccupation during glacial and postglacial recent time. It is a highly subjective classification.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Preglacial-pre-last glacial
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Valleys that are interpreted to have been eroded prior to the last glaciation, whose age is uncertain; preglacial or glacial, or a combination of both. For some valleys there is stratigraphic evidence to suggest a glacial age.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Preglacial-recent
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Bedrock valleys that are interpreted to have been formed prior to glaciation but which have subsequently been occupied, and possibly modified, by present-day streams. In most cases these are palimpsest valleys, buried to varying degrees, which continue to function as basins for present-day drainage.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Recent
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Bedrock valleys considered to have been eroded during recent time, into which bedrock has been incised, and in some cases, exposed. In many cases these constitute tributaries to the major streams and rivers in the province.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Uncertain
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Bedrock valleys in which the age is uncertain, either because the origin of the thalwegs in the source shapefile is unknown, or because the valley could have been formed at any time during Alberta’s history. In almost all cases these valleys are buried, and not evident on digital elevation models of Alberta’s land surface. In other cases there are circumstantial lines of evidence to suggest that either preglacial or glacial age are valid interpretations.

Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Buried
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
These are infilled valleys in which bedrock is not exposed, nor is there any present-day surface expression, or any subtle surface expression of the bedrock valley below. These valleys maybe of different ages, except recent.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Buried-reoccupied
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
These valleys were once buried, but later re-excavated, or reoccupied by streams of either glacial meltwater or recent subaerial drainage.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Exposed
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Bedrock is exposed along the walls or floors of these valleys. Exposure generally occurs along present-day streams, or within glacial meltwater channels eroded during the last stages of the last glaciation. In almost all cases exposed bedrock is evident on Google Earth imagery.

Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Exposed-partly buried
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
These are glacial meltwater channels and spillways that have incised the underlying bedrock, but subsequently have been partly infilled. Bedrock may or may not be exposed along segments of the valleys.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Palimpsest-buried
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Palimpsest valleys have elements of their older valley form, but are partly masked by valley infill. Generally these are interpreted to be partly infilled preglacial bedrock valleys.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Palimpsest-buried-reoccupied
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
These are palimpsest valleys that have been partly infilled and later incised by present-day streams. Infill may be glacigenic sediment or recent stream alluvium. Bedrock maybe exposed in areas of recent stream incision.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Palimpsest-reoccupied
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
These valleys are classified as palimpsest, having little to no infill, and re-occupied by present-day drainage. Valley erosion may have occurred prior to glaciation, and infill, if once present, has been mostly eroded. The majority of these valleys are located in the Swan Hills, and in the foothills and front ranges of the Rocky Mountains. More of these remain to be mapped in the foothills and mountains.

Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Partly exposed-valley fill
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Valleys eroded into bedrock and later partially infilled with present-day stream alluvium. Many present-day river valleys fall under this category, especially in the foothills where sediment load is high.

Attribute:
Attribute Label: Genesis
Attribute Definition:
There are 8 classes regarding the genesis of bedrock valleys, relating mainly to the fluvial environment at time of erosion.
Attribute Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Attribute Domain Values:
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Glacial lake spillway
Enumerated Domain Value Definition: Steep-walled bedrock valleys formed by the catastrophic release of glacially-ponded meltwater.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Subaerial-glacial lake spillway
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Bedrock valleys interpreted to have been formed initially by subaerial erosion prior to the last glaciation, but which were later modified by the drainage of glacially-ponded meltwater in spillway channels that re-occupied the former drainage system.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Glacial meltwater
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Valleys (channels) formed on the bedrock surface by the incision of glacial meltwater. Some meltwater channels may have also functioned as spillways during the drainage of ice-ponded glacial lakes.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Glacial meltwater-subaerial
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Valleys formed by the incision of glacial meltwater into the bedrock surface, and subsequently incised by present-day streams.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Glacial meltwater ice-contact
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Bedrock valleys formed primarily by the incision of glacial meltwater flowing beneath the glacier ice, sometimes referred to as tunnel valleys, or directly in contact with glacier ice, but not necessarily beneath the glacier.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Subaerial
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Valleys eroded by subaerial drainage during preglacial, interglacial, and recent times. Glacial meltwater is not considered to have played any role in their formation.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Subaerial-glacial meltwater
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
Bedrock valleys eroded by both subaerial fluvial drainage (either prior to or subsequent to erosion by glacial meltwater) and by glacial meltwater. The timing and sequence of these erosive events may differ from valley to valley.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Enumerated Domain:
Enumerated Domain Value: Uncertain
Enumerated Domain Value Definition:
The genesis of these bedrock valleys is uncertain, . primarily because most are buried, and information regarding sedimentology and age are lacking. Their occurrence is mapped primarily from borehole evidence.
Enumerated Domain Value Definition Source: Alberta Geological Survey
Attribute:
Attribute Label: Catchment
Attribute Definition:
In some cases bedrock valleys have been classified according to the basin that they feed into. In the case of valleys formed during postglacial and recent time, the catchment will reflect that of present-day stream and river into which the tributary flows. In the case of buried preglacial valleys, the catchment name will reflect that of the major preglacial valley into which drainage within the tributary valley is believed to have once flowed.
