Description:
Abstract:
These Alberta spring locations were digitized from the 1:50 000 Alberta Hydrogeology Information Map Series (48 atlases) by the Alberta Research Council from the 1960s and 1970s. Springs were digitized as part of the digital data capture process.
Purpose:
To ensure the spring information is captured in digital format and to be used for general hydrogeological studies and web applications/dissemination.

Data Quality Information:
Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report:
Location and electrical conductivity attributes used for groundtruthing purposes were generally accurate. The flow volumes attribute is temporal, therefore not comparable.
Logical Consistency Report:
All points are within the boundary of Alberta. Some groundtruthing conducted in the following NTS map areas: 73E, 73L, 73M, 83E, 83L, 83H, 83J and 83B.
Completeness Report: Data from two map areas were missing, but that was unknown at the time of data processing.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
Maximum error is within 150 metres. RMS errors obtained during georeferencing of source maps were less than 0.254 millimetres.

Process Description:

The spring locations were digitized from the Alberta Hydrogeological Information Map Series. The springs were originally located on 1:50,000 map sheets on a Mylar overlay. The maps were in many cases folded, or where the area spread across two map sheets, the maps were taped together. Each map was registered using no less than 4 control points and up to a possible 8. A 0.002 RMS error was desirable; however, in some cases, the RMS was as high as 0.010. Each map was registered using the original projection of the map; i.e., UTM 11 or 12 NAD 27.

The springs from each map in a series were digitized into a coverage. All individual coverages for each zone were appended together to produce a temporary coverage for the corresponding zone. Both coverages were then projected from UTM 11 or 12 NAD 27 to 10TM NAD 83. These newly projected coverages were appended together to produce springs_pt_tm.shp. The ARCinfo 8.02 coverage was converted into an Arcview 3.2 shapefile with the same name. Attribute editing was completed in Arcview 3.2.
