Description:
Abstract:

This dataset results from mapping the surficial geology, and sand and gravel deposits with aggregate potential in the McLennan area (NTS 83N). This shapefile shows where materials and geology were observed at natural outcrops, sand and gravel pits, hand auger holes, and excavations dug by a backhoe. The type, thickness and order of the observed materials are described in the attribute table.

Map 536 is a PDF version generated from the shapefiles.

Purpose:
To provide information on sand and gravel deposits with aggregate potential to support the sustainable development of Alberta's Earth mineral resources.

Logical Consistency Report:
Spatial locations and site numbers are unique. Elevations of "0" mean the elevation was not recorded in the original site descriptions. At least one unit was described for each location. We described additional units if we observed them at the location. Stratigraphically speaking, Unit 1 overlies Unit 2, which overlies Unit 3, which overlies Unit 4. The unit thickness was reported only if the thickness was documented in the original site description. For each site, the thickness of the deepest unit indicated the minimum thickness of that unit. Attributes were scanned visually for correctness. Three people described the sites for two different purposes: surficial geology mapping, and sand and gravel mapping. Whenever possible, the surficial geology material descriptions were modified to conform to sand and gravel terminology.
Completeness Report:
All site locations are listed in the dataset. The completeness of the additional attributes for each location varies.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
We gathered the sand and gravel site locations using a Garmin GPSMap 60CSx GPS, whereas the surficial geology locations from Alberta Geological Survey Open File Report 2008-02 were gathered with a Garmin GPSMap 76CSx GPS. However, both GPSs have the same accuracy of +/-10 metres, 95% typical.
Quantitative Horizontal Positional Accuracy Assessment:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Value: 10
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Explanation:
The owner's manual for the GPS Map 60CSx and GPS Map 76 CSx report an accuracy of +/-10 metres, 95% typical.
Vertical Positional Accuracy:
Vertical Positional Accuracy Report:
We gathered the sand and gravel site locations using a Garmin GPSMap 60CSx GPS, whereas the surficial geology locations from Alberta Geological Survey Open File Report 2008-02 were gathered with a Garmin GPSMap 76CSx GPS. However, both GPSs have the same altimeter accuracy of +/- 10 feet, resolution 1 foot, subject to proper user calibration.
Quantitative Vertical Positional Accuracy Assessment:
Vertical Positional Accuracy Value: 3
Vertical Positional Accuracy Explanation:
The owner's manual for the GPS Map 60CSx and GPS Map 76 CSx report an accuracy of +/- 10 feet, resolution 1 foot, subject to proper user calibration. The user of the GPS Map 60CSx did not calibrate the altimeter, and it is unknown whether the users of the GPS Map 76CSx calibrated the altimeter. Therefore, the vertical positional accuracy of 3 metres should be viewed cautiously.

Process Step:
Process Description:

While mapping the sand and gravel deposits in the McLennan area, the materials and geology observed at natural outcrops, sand and gravel pits, hand auger holes, and excavations dug by a backhoe were described on paper forms and in field notebooks. We recorded the locations of the site investigations using a GPS (Garmin GPSmap 60CSx). A summer student entered these observations and locations into an Access database. The author verified the data by visually inspecting every record entered by the student.

The Access database was queried to make a table that included the name, location and materials observed at each site. This table was appended to the table of sites that were observed by the surficial geology mappers (Appendix 1 of Alberta Geological Survey Open File Report 2008-02). The site descriptions from the Open File Report were edited to match the convention of the sand and gravel site data. We entered the table of site descriptions into ArcGIS and created a shapefile of site investigations in 83N for public distribution.
