Abstract:
This dataset represents the topography of the top of the Paskapoo Formation, which is also the bedrock topography in the western part of Alberta. We clipped the surface from Alberta Geological Survey's Bedrock Topography of Alberta grid using the areal extent of the Paskapoo Formation shown on Alberta Geological Survey Map 236, Geological Map of Alberta. The dataset is in ESRI ASCII grid format
Purpose:
This surface was created to define the distribution and geometry of hydrostratigraphic units within the Paskapoo Formation.

Structure top values for the Paskapoo Formation had inherent uncertainties due to the low spatial resolution of the water-well lithologs.
Logical Consistency Report:
We tested the Paskapoo Formation top elevations to ensure they were not higher than the present-day topography, as defined by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission digital dataset. There are no duplicate locations because the modelling software assigned x-y locations to all data values. Null data are coded '-9999'. Isopach values cannot be less than ‘0.’

We screened the well-log data to ensure that the holes penetrated the bedrock of the Paskapoo Formation in water-well lithologs, and that we could identify the bedrock surface in oil and gas geophysical logs.

Structure top values for the Paskapoo Formation have inherent uncertainties due to generalizations regarding the locations of point locations, particularly the locations of water wells. The modelling software assigned topography values to the centre of the 500 m sized cell. The gridded values are in a 10TM NAD83 coordinate system.

Vertical Positional Accuracy Report:
Because of uncertainty in the location of water wells (they are typically reported only to the nearest legal subdivision of the Alberta Township System), the elevation of an individual borehole can have an uncertainty of 10s of metres. Therefore, the topography of the bedrock surface/top of the Paskapoo Formation, as calculated from a water-well litholog, has an inherent uncertainty of the same magnitude.

We produced this dataset by clipping the undeformed extent of the Paskapoo Formation from the bedrock topography of Alberta. We selected the Paskapoo Formation polygons from Alberta Geological Survey Digital Dataset 2004-0033, Bedrock Geology of Alberta (GIS data) and used them as a clipping boundary to subset the bedrock topography of the Paskapoo.
