Abstract:
This is a 1000 m cell-sized raster dataset of the upper surface of the Sunchild Aquifer, modelled from the >55% sand point data derived by depth-slice analysis of well-log data. Alberta Geological Survey Bulletin 66 provides details on this grid dataset. The dataset is in ESRI ASCII grid format.
Purpose: This dataset was generated to define the top of the Sunchild aquifer within the Paskapoo Formation.

There could be a significant difference between sand values calculated at a borehole site and the modelled values assigned to the locations of the centre of regional 1000 m size grid cells.

This raster dataset represents the amalgamated elevations of >55% average sand values that overlie muddy Lacombe sediment in 25 m thick slices constructed parallel to the base of the Paskapoo Formation. The dataset is in ESRI ASCII grid format. Null data are coded '-9999'.
Completeness Report:
This dataset represents the elevation from only those 25 m thick slices in the 3-D model in which the average sand values exceed 55% and overlie the muddy sediment in the underlying 25 m thick slice. See Alberta Geological Survey Bulletin 66 for a detailed discussion of the selection criteria used. We only modelled the undeformed part of the Paskapoo Formation, which lies east of the Rocky Mountain fold-and-thrust belt, in this dataset.

We assigned horizontal coordinates to the centre of each cell in the raster dataset. Horizontal accuracy of the original well data varies. For gamma-ray logs from the oil and gas industry, well locations are surveyed to the nearest 10 cm. For water-well lithologs, well locations are only provided to the centre of a legal subdivision or the centre of a quarter section. Therefore, the true location may differ by as much as 200 m to 400 m from the assigned location.

We assigned the estimated elevation values in this raster dataset to the midpoint of the 25 m thick slices in the three-dimensional model. We tested the values to ensure they were not higher than the bedrock topography or the topography of the present-day land surface.

Process Description:
We derived the three-dimensional data used to model the distribution of sandiness from the calculated average sand value of 25 m thick slice intervals in boreholes completed in the Paskapoo Formation. We subjectively defined the Sunchild aquifer based on the three-dimensional renderings of >55% sand isovalues using Voxler ™ modelling software. The decision on how to assign a top to the three-dimensional body was based on the maximum height above the base of the Paskapoo Formation that a sand body extended above the muddy Lacombe aquitard. The height above the base of the Paskapoo Formation was later added to the elevation of the base of the Paskapoo grid to produce this dataset. Refer to Alberta Geological Survey Bulletin 66 for more detail regarding methodology.
