Abstract:
The sub-Cretaceous unconformity is a major component of the three-dimensional geological model of Alberta. Underlying geological units intersect the sub-Cretaceous unconformity at an oblique angle, creating a subcrop area of each unit at the unconformity surface. This data set is based on a compilation of stratigraphic picks of the sub-Cretaceous unconformity identified by the truncation of underlying units in west-central Alberta. The study area covers NTS map sheets 83G, 83J, 83K, and parts of 83F. The southwestern limit of the study area is defined by the approximate limit of the main Cordilleran deformation.
Purpose: To provide subcrop extent polygons of geological units intersecting the sub-Cretaceous unconformity.

The horizontal accuracy of the subcrop polygons is unknown. Subcrop boundaries are based on the presence or absence of the subcropping geological unit. Factors affecting the positioning of the subcrop boundaries include well data spacing, the amount of wells used to determine the subcrop position, the accuracy of the elevation surface, the accuracy of the underlying modelled surfaces that are projected through the sub-Cretaceous unconformity surface, and the accuracy of the subcrop line when drawn by the geologist. These polygons are produced at a regional scale and are not intended for local-scale studies.

Process Description:

Step 1: (Input) 4023 picks of the sub-Cretaceous unconformity were used to identify the extent of the subcropping geological units and delineate the subcrop polygons.

Step 2: (Creating subcrop boundaries) Surfaces for the geological units underlying the sub-Cretaceous unconformity were independently modelled in ArcMap using the ordinary kriging algorithm using picks that were made in unison with unconformity picks. These picks were made to determine the form and geometry of the geological units below the sub-Cretaceous unconformity. These geostatistically modelled surfaces were projected through the modelled sub-Cretaceous unconformity surface to create intersection lines representing the subcrop boundaries. To ensure that the modelled subcrop boundaries were consistent with the eroded unit picks, the results were validated with well control data, and the subcrop lines were adjusted where required.
