Map 207D
Quaternary Geology, Central Alberta
This compact disc constitutes a digital release of Map 207. The intent is to
make the map available in a variety of common digital formats to meet the needs
of 2 groups of users: GIS operator and those requiring an exact version of the
published map in a readily printable format. GIS file is available in Arc/Info
Export (.e00), and shapefile format. The printer-ready files are in Postscript
(.eps) and Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format
Symbol Installation for ArcView
Prior to opening the digital Quaternary geology ArcView 3.1+ Project (ags_quat_ca.apr), two fonts, ags.ttf and alluvial.ttf, located in the "symbols" directory found on this CD will need to be installed into your FONTS directory located in your Control Panel. In addition, the AGS Palette, ags.avp, will also need to be copied into your ArcView symbols folder (located in %AVhome%/ESRI/AV_GIS30/ARCVIEW/SYMBOLS) in order for the correct Quaternary Geology symbology to appear.
Please Note: If working on WINDOWS NT or if ArcView is not locally installed, certain administrator privileges may be required to load the fonts and palette onto your system. Please contact your System Administrator if this applies to you. If you require detailed instructions, please see below.
Font Installation:
1. In your FONTS directory (Start Menu, Settings, Control Panel, Fonts) Click on the File menu and select INSTALL NEW FONT.
2. Maneuver to the location where the CDROM is located and open the SYMBOLS directory.
3. Select the two fonts and Click OK.
4. You will be informed when the fonts are successfully loaded.
Palette Installation:
1. Maneuver to the location where the CDROM is located and open the SYMBOLS directory. Copy the AGS Palette (Select ags.avp, Edit, Copy).
2. Maneuver to the location of your ArcView Symbols folder (%AVhome%/ESRI/AV_GIS30/ARCVIEW/SYMBOLS). Paste the AGS Palette into the Symbols Directory (Edit, Paste).
3. To view palette, prior to opening project file in ArcView, go to your Symbol Window (Ctrl-P, or Window, Symbol Window) and click onto the last tab. Click on LOAD and maneuver the path to the location that you have saved the ags.avp file. Select this file and click ok. When ArcView is finished loading, both the pen and fill tabs will be updated with the created Quaternary Map linesets and color shades (specific to the plotter outlined in the data disclaimer).

A brief description follows of each of the data/file formats and how they may be used, including a summary table (Table 1) of the specific files in each of the respective folders. Map projection information for each of the data sets is also given in Table 1.
Note that the ArcExplorer and ArcView folders contain digital base map information obtained from the National Atlas of Canada GeoGratis web site (http://geogratis.cgdi.gc.ca/nationalatlas/e_basemaps.html), compiled at a scale of 1:2,000,000. These data include native reserves, park boundaries, railway lines, major roads, rivers, towns and urban areas.
ArcExplorer
The geological map of Alberta can be viewed interactively using Environmental Systems Research Institute’s ArcExplorer, a free geographic data viewer. Follow the directions below to install the ArcExplorer software and view Map 207:
Installing ArcExplorer 2.0 from CD for Windows 95/98/NT:
1. Open a Windows Explorer window and navigate to your CD-ROM drive.
2. Double click ae2setup.exe to install ArcExplorer 2.0.
3. Follow the installation instructions.
Viewing Map207 with ArcExplorer
1. Start ArcExplorer (double click Icon on desktop or from the Start button,
select Programs -> ESRI -> ArcExplorer 2.0 -> ArcExplorer).
2. In ArcExplorer, select File -> Open.
3. Select your CD-ROM drive from the Look in: window.
4. Double click on the map207 folder.
5. Double click on the Quat_South folder.
6. Double click 'South.aep' file to open the map.
Quat_South
The ArcView project AGS_QUAT_SA.APR and ArcExplorer project SOUTH.AEP in this folder contain views of the Quaternary geology of southern Alberta. Coverages and shapefiles have been set the typical 10 degree Transverse Mercator projection for Alberta:

Central meridian: -115.00
Reference latitude: 0
Scale factor: 0.9992
False easting: 500000
False northing: 0
Users may modify the view’s projection properties to suit their own needs. Alternatively, to work in a specific projection with other projected shapefiles, first change the view to the desired projection, save each theme as a projected shapefile, then create a new view and add the projected shapefile themes.
The ArcView project was created with ArcView version 3.2a.
Exports
Export files in this folder were created from coverages in Arc/Info Version 8.0.2. They are backward-compatible with ArcInfo Version 7.x.
Symbols
This folder contains customized font and symbol files for the ArcView project
Legends
This folder contains ArcView legends to be used by the ArcView project.
Images
This folder contains Adobe Acrobat PDF documents of the published version of map 207, AGS_SOUTH.PDF,and are well-suited to viewing the map (see the Postscript section for plotting instructions). (The free viewer, Acrobat Reader, can be downloaded from Adobe’s website at http://www.adobe.com/.) Note that the published version of map 207 (and its associated PDF file) is referenced to the NAD83 datum.
A freeware version of Adobe® Acrobat Reader® for Microsoft® Windows is included on the CD-ROM. Adobe® Acrobat Reader® for other platforms are available from Adobe's Web site at www.adobe.com.
To install the software, double-click the "acrobat.exe" file and follow the prompts for installation.
Click on the link below to open the PDF map.
Postscript file, AGS_SOUTH.EPS, can be either imported into a graphics software package or plotted directly from the Windows Explorer window:
1. Right click on the .eps file
2. Select Print, OK
3. Choose a printer from the dropdown list, then click OK.
