This report provides an inventory of landslides at the Town of Peace River detailing the location, geometry, and kinematics for each landslide identified. The report details the methods used to define discrete landslide boundaries within a 100 square km study area centred at the Town of Peace River. The report also introduces preliminary work investigating the relationship between surface roughness derived from bare-earth light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and landslide activity. Field-based mapping and remote-sensing data sources, such as LiDAR and airphoto imagery, provided a means with which to classify each landslide based on its characteristics.
Statistical methods based on the geographic information system (GIS) were applied to a LiDAR digital elevation model to produce derivative maps depicting the distribution of slope angle, surface roughness, and slope convexity of each landslide surface. We applied the spatial information provided by these derivative maps to understand the relative level of landslide activity in the absence of displacement data. This report details the preliminary work using GIS-based spatial analysis techniques and outlines the initial steps for an ongoing study in which these methods will be refined and improved. The goal is to apply a robust spatial-analysis technique to other river-valley systems with known instabilities.
