Using Earth Observation (EO) Technologies to Support Natural Resource Development and Meet Environmental Monitoring Needs

Before the launch of the Earth’s Resources Technology Satellite, ERTS-1 (later renamed Landsat-1), in 1972, measurement and monitoring of changes on the earth’s surface was done using land-based data collection and aerial photography. Using these traditional techniques made it very challenging to study changes on the earth’s surface at anything other than a very local scale. Today, a multitude of Earth observation (EO) satellites provide regular coverage of all parts of the globe, and in some cases these data are made available at no cost.

The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) has been using this free resource and developing the capacity to use EO technologies as they are introduced to help improve operational and regulatory performance at the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) and mitigate the risks associated with natural resource management and protection of the environment.
