A 3D geological model of the Peace River area was built covering 74 471 km2.  The model is composed of 17 geological units from the ground surface down to the Precambrian basement (Figure 1).  All geological units have been modelled at a resolution of 500 m × 500 m.

This model was built to assist with the geological and geochemical investigation of odours and emissions from heavy oil and bitumen production in the Peace River Oil Sands (PROS) Area in Alberta. This study was initiated in response to a formal proceeding by the Alberta Energy Regulator.

Next Steps

  • refine and further subdivide the Cretaceous deposits throughout the model area
  • integrate oil, gas, and groundwater resources within the 3D geological model
  • incorporate information from the structural database to more accurately portray faults and linear offsets within this model
