Chapter 21 Table Gas Production from the Viking

View Table 21.3b as an image.

Gas production from the Viking is widespread and extensive in southern, central and western Alberta, northeast B.C. and western Saskatchewan. The B.C. fields occur in the Peace River Block and immediately to the south. There is no Viking gas production in northern Alberta or B.C. or in central or eastern Saskatchewan.

Included are fields producing from the Viking, Bow Island, Basal Colorado, Peace River Group, Paddy and Cadotte.

There are 75 Viking gas fields with Initial Established Marketable Gas Reserves of over 1000 x 106m3 (35 BCF), with 69 in Alberta, 4 in Saskatchewan and 2 in B.C. The ten largest Viking gas fields, listed in order of Initial Established Marketable gas reserves, are shown in Table 1. Cumulative production data for Alberta and British Columbia are updated to the end of 1990 and for Saskatchewan to the end of 1989.

Eight of these fields are in south-central Alberta, while the Sinclair field is in west-central Alberta and the Coleville-Smiley field is in southwest Saskatchewan. These Viking gas fields occur in stratigraphic traps developed in this shelf sands, elongate offshore bars or deltaic deposits.

Total recoverable gas reserves in the Viking are estimated at 277.9 x 109m3, of which 103.4 x 109m3 have already been produced. Initial Established In-Place Volume of Viking gas reserves total 514 x 109m3. There are a total of 3280 Viking gas pools, with an average 85 x 106m3 recoverable gas reserves/pool. Table 2 lists the distribution of Viking gas reserves according to In-Place Pool Size.
