Chapter 14 Table Oil Production from the Banff/Bakken
View Table 14.32a1 as an image.
Oil production from the Banff /Bakken occurs primarily at the unconformity edge in southwest Manitoba, western Saskatchewan and southeast Alberta. Included are fields producing from the Lodgepole Formation in Manitoba. Numerous other small Banff/Bakken oil fields are scattered throughout southern and central Alberta and Saskatchewan.
There are eleven Banff/Bakken oil fields with Initial Established Recoverable Oil Reserves of over 1 x 106 m3 (6 MMBbls). The ten largest Banff/Bakken oil fields, listed in order of Initial Established Recoverable Reserves, are shown in Table 1. Cumulative production data for Alberta are updated to the end of 1990 and for Saskatchewan to the end of 1989.
Table 1. Ten Largest Banff/Bakken Oil Fields (in units of 106m3).
No. | Field | Stratigraphic Unit | No. of Pools | Recoverable Reserves | In-Place volume | Cumulative Production | Discovery Year |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
4 | Virden | Lodgepole | 6 | 23.4 | not avlbl. | 19.8 | 1953 |

Luseland* | Bakken Sd | 1 | 1.1 | 15.9 | 0.3 | 1979 |
All of these fields occur at the unconformity edge. Virden and Daly fields are in southwest Manitoba, Coleville, Cactus Lake, North Hoosier and Luseland in western Saskatdhewan and the last four in southern and central Alberta.
*Asterisks identify the heavy-oil pools.
Total recoverable oil reserves in the Banff/Bakken (excluding Manitoba) are estimated at 37.1 x 106m3, of which 19.3 x 106m3 have already been produced. Initial Established In-Place Volume of Banff/Bakken gas reserves (excluding Manitoba) totals 265.3 x 106m3. There are 147 Banff/Bakken oil pools in Alberta and Saskatchewan in 56 fields, with an average 252 x 103 m3 recoverable oil reserves/pool. Table 2 lists the distribution of Banff/Bakken oil reserves (excluding Manitoba) according to In-Place Pool Size.
