Current Report Series

Reporting on Alberta’s geology and resources is one of the Alberta Geological Survey’s primary functions since its inception. Over our history, we have produced several report-type series, primarily technical reports, meant for different audiences and purposes. Only five of these series are still being published today:

Bulletins (BUL)

Published since 1958, Bulletins are the premier publication series at the Alberta Geological Survey. A Bulletin contains a comprehensive, peer-reviewed synthesis on a subject or area, produced after completing a major research or mapping project.

Reports (REP)

Originally published between 1920 and 1969, Reports were reintroduced in 2016 as an internally peer-reviewed, formally edited publication summarizing work on a specific project.

Open File Reports (OFR)

Redefined in 2016, Open File Reports are for the quick release of technical information. The expedited publication process means reports in this series receive limited review and editing.

Information Series Reports (INF)

The Information Series Reports include a variety of publication types(brochures, pamphlets, maps) and contain geoscience information for the general public or for marketing and promotional purposes.

Special Reports (SPE)

Special Report are either written by a member of a different organization or funded by and written for an external client; they may not conform to our publication standards.

Historical Report Series

These report series are no longer published or have changed over the years to different types of reports, however these older reports are still available for download:

Economic Geology Reports (ECO)

Published between 1971 and 1991, Economic Geology Reports reported on specific geological resources.

Earth Sciences Notes (ESN)

The Earth Sciences Notes series consists of three brief technical publications on Alberta clay resources published between 1977 and 1980.

Earth Sciences Reports (ESR)

Produced from 1955 to 2008, Earth Sciences Reports are technical reports written for industry, government, and academia.

Geo-Notes (GEO)

Produced between 1997 and 2008, Geo-Notes were brief technical reports used for disseminating the results of ongoing geological investigations.

Memoirs (MEM)

There are two Memoir publications published between 1959 and 1960.

Open File Reports (OFR)

Published from 1942 to the present, Open File Reports originally were a quick release of technical information. This series was redefined between 2009 and 2015 as a formally edited, internally peer-reviewed report. In 2016, the series was returned to its original design: a quick release of technical information.

Reports (REP)

Originally published between 1920 and 1969, Reports contain our oldest publications. They include technical publications and annual reports from the Alberta Research Council, a former home of the Alberta Geological Survey. We reintroduced the Report series in 2016 for publishing internally peer-reviewed technical documents summarizing work on a specific project.
