This digital data release includes bulk and clay mineralogy data from clay speciation X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses of fine-grained sedimentary rock samples from the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin in Alberta. These samples were selected from archived sample material at the Alberta Energy Regulator / Alberta Geological Survey (AAER/AGS) Mineral Core Research Facility in Edmonton and from drillcore at the AER Core Research Centre in Calgary. The sample sites include oil and gas wells and mineral exploration boreholes located throughout the province. The samples presented here were previously analyzed for whole-rock lithogeochemistry, and were selected for clay speciation XRD analysis based on their chemical compositions, geospatial locations, and stratigraphic intervals. This dataset includes samples sourced from the following stratigraphic units: Gething Formation, Loon River Formation, Belle Fourche Formation, and Second White Specks Formation. This work was completed under the Mineral Grant provided by the Government of Alberta June 22, 2021.
