Abstract

During investigations into low-temperature fluidized-bed carbonization of sub-bituminous coal, it was observed that tar and light oil yields tended to be so low as to make industrial exploitation of the process economically unattractive. To determine if this was a peculiarity of the carbonization procedure or due to the coal, a study was started to determine the carbonization yields in a laboratory assay apparatus. This report outlines the study process and results.
