Oil production from the Viking is concentrated in southwest Saskatchewan and southern and central Alberta, and occurs in northwest-southeast trending porous sandstone/conglomerate trends. Included are fields producing from the Viking, Bow Island and Basal Colorado.

There are 15 Viking oil fields (11 in Alberta and 4 in Saskatchewan) with Initial Established Recoverable Oil Reserves of over 1 x 10⁶ m³ (6 MMBbls). The ten largest Viking oil fields, listed in order of Initial Established Recoverable Reserves, are shown in Table 1. Cumulative production data for Alberta are updated to the end of 1990 and for Saskatchewan to the end of 1989.

Six of these fields are in south-central Alberta, and the Dodsland, Smiley-Dewar, Eureka and Kerrobert fields are in southwest Saskatchewan. All but three of the smaller Viking oil fields contain tight to medium gravity oil.

Total recoverable oil reserves in the Viking are estimated at 88.7 x 10⁶m³, of which 66.8 x 10⁶m³ have already been produced. Initial Established In-Place Volume of Viking oil reserves totals 577 x 10⁶m³ There are 289 Viking oil pools, with an average 307 x 10³m³ recoverable oil reserves / pool. Table 2 lists the distribution of Viking oil reserves according to In-Place Pool Size.
