Soils of the Frog Lake Indian Reserve, Alberta

This map sheet describes the soil resources of the Frog Lake Indian Reserve. This area is part of a block (specifically township 57, and the southern third of township 58, ranges 1-10 west of the 4th meridian) where the soils have not been previously mapped. The entire block was mapped as part of the County of St. Paul soil survey project. The southern part of the Reserve is also included on this soils map to provide a planning base for the proposed expansion of agricultural land use within the Reserve. The soil resource to the north and south of this map sheet is described in the soil survey of the Sand River Area (73L), (Kocaoglu 1975) and in the soil survey of Wainwright and Vermilion Sheets (Wyatt et al. 1944), respectively. To the east, delineations correlate with the Fishing Lake Metis Settlement soil map (Brierley and Nikiforuk 1989), and west, delineations correspond with similar landscapes described during the soil survey of the County of St. Paul. Field work for the soil survey of the Frog Lake Indian Reserve was conducted in August 1988. Map delineations were drawn based on interpretations of aerial photographs. Map units were then defined and described using data obtained during field verification and information extracted from neighbouring soil survey reports. In the area within townships 57 and 58, 20 soil inspections were made. No field observations were made within the portion of the Reserve, south of township 57. The main source of information was the soil survey of the Wainwright and Vermilion Sheets (Wyatt et al. 1944), supplemented with previous knowledge obtained from mapping the soil resource within the Fishing Lake Metis Settlement and the County of S. Paul.
